Go 1-on-1 with Learning!
Build Basics, Love Learning, Build Successes
What is Back2Basics with Katie?
To build a successful program, we need to build both your child’s confidence and abilities. Before we even start, I pinpoint their current abilities, areas of struggle or need for advanced instruction, and define our desirable, successful endpoints so we can construct a curriculum that move us forward to those specific skills and abilities. The lessons are designed to engage critical thinking skills that deepen your child’s understanding which leads to increased confidence.
I focus on growth but recognize that not every student recognizes success. I help your child recognize their successes and celebrate them as stepping stones to greater learning.
And, for those parents who wish to participate in the process, I also provide extra support so that you, the parent, can help your child.
Going 1-on-1 with Learning!
Teachers face challenges every day – and the biggest is class size and group instruction. To fit each student into the same confining framework frustrates them because they realize that each student – your student – is unique.
Tutoring fills that unique space for your student, whether they need more practice to be successful or more challenges to reach their potential. With One-on-One Instruction, they get the tailored program that elevates their skills and knowledge with the dedicated attention of a highly qualified teacher.
What is Child-Centered Learning?
Each student is different! Each needs their own pathway to success. We should engage students at their individual levels of ability without limiting them. For advanced students, this means a pathway to material and concepts that will challenge them. For students who struggle, they get the support they need to flourish and grow on their pathway.
And, as each student is unique, the WAY they learn is, too. That is why I pay attention to the WAY they learn.
Quick story – I’m a visual learner with some auditory. One of my sisters is primarily kinesthetic, and my youngest sister, primarily auditory. Fortunately for us, our parents learned to adapt to each of styles.
I learned that lesson almost unconsciously - some of us learn better through visuals, some through movement, some from sound and story. I incorporate those needs as well - each session is built with your child and their learning modalities in mind.
Boring? Learning Shouldn’t Be!
Sitting through (sleeping through) a boring lesson, lecture, or meeting that seemed to drag forever might be a universal human experience. Likewise, none of us will forget that favorite lecture or meeting that was fun and productive that ended too soon.
The best learning occurs when a person is engaged, actively participating. For younger students, this translates to hands-on activities, structured play, and FUN.
I foster wonder, interest, curiosity - positive emotions that demonstrably enhance the learning experience. Your child will remember what they learned so much more when we integrate concrete and meaningful experiences into the process.
The best play is educational – and while it may look like your student is playing, they are LEARNING.
We Need to Grow their Confidence
It can be disheartening for a child to work so hard, yet still not quite have a grasp on a concept. The children lose faith in themselves, their spark for learning fades, and they give up.
I never want to see that spark die. I believe that every child is capable of so much, given the right tools, the right support, and a guide. Seeing their face light up when they have that “AHA!” moment is so amazing! Once they feel successful, they start to believe in themselves again, and THEIR vision of what is possible grows and with it, the perseverance to keep trying. That moment, that “AHA!” is when we start to see improvement and success!
Activities you can work on together
While our programs encourage your little ones to become better independent learners, we’ve also included special opportunities for you to work together.
